Defending American Athletic Conference champions open season on Sept. 21-23 in Tennessee
HOUSTON – The defending American Athletic Conference champion University of Houston Women's Golf program will compete in nine regular-season tournaments during the 2018-19 season, Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell announced Thursday.
The Cougars, who a year ago captured The American title for the second time in the last three seasons, will compete in four tournaments during the fall with five events scheduled in the spring.
Houston, which finished No. 29 in the final Golfstat and Golfweek national rankings in 2018, will visit three states (Tennessee, Louisiana and Arizona) with three tournaments in the state of Texas as well as a trip to Mexico.
"The thing I like about our schedule is that it is very familiar. We start at the Mason Rudolph Championship, which is one of our favorite stops of the year, and then we have back-to-back tournaments in the state of Texas," said Chadwell, who enters his sixth season with the Cougars in 2018-19. "The spring season is familiar as well with the only changes being back-to-back events in Arizona. All of this will give us a look at what the NCAA Championships will look like from 2020 to 2022."
The Cougars return five letterwinners from the 2017-18 team, which posted five Top-Three finishes under Chadwell, who was recognized as the 2018 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Leonie Harm returns for her senior season after earning WGCA All-America Honorable Mention honors, a first in program history.
The 2018 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year qualified for the NCAA Championships as an individual for the second time in her career after clinching a spot in a playoff with a school-record 65 in the Final Round and winning on the seventh hole at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Standing at No. 18 in the latest World's Amateur Golf Rankings, Harm continued her stellar play during the summer. She captured the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship title in late June and competed in the Ricoh Women's British Open as an amateur in early August, the first major championship appearance by a Cougar in program history.
"We will see a lot of new faces on our team this year after losing six seniors from a year ago," Chadwell said. "With four incoming freshmen with another great graduating class, there is a lot of excitement in the program. We are looking forward to sending our seniors out on a high note and introducing our newcomers to our culture and daily life in Houston Women's Golf."
FALL SEASON
The Cougars open their season when they tee off at the Mason Rudolph Championship on Sept. 21-23 at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.
From there, the team will compete in two tournaments in the month of October. The Cougars compete at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational at TPC San Antonio on Oct. 14-16 before playing at the Jim West Challenge at Kissing Tree Golf Course in San Marcos, Texas, on Oct. 28-29.
Houston wraps up its fall season when it competes at the Baylor Invitational at Club Campestre San Jose at San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, on Nov. 2-4.
SPRING SEASON
After a two-month break, the Cougars begin the spring campaign when they tee off at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship at English Turn Country Club in New Orleans on Feb. 17-19.
Houston returns home to play host to their own Icon Invitational on Feb. 25-26 at The Woodlands Country Club in The Woodlands, Texas. Chadwell and the Cougars welcome an elite field, which includes Clemson, Kansas State, Kent State, Memphis, North Texas, Purdue, SMU, Southern Miss, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State, Texas Tech and UTSA.
The team will take a trip west in mid-March, teeing off at the Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., on March 15-17 and at the MountainView Collegiate at The Preserve at SaddleBrooke in Tucson, Ariz., on March 22-24.
The Cougars conclude their regular season at the Bruzzy Challenge at Lantana Golf Club in Dallas on April 1-2. A year ago, Houston posted a score of 909 to tie for second, the team's third Top-2 showing of the season.
POSTSEASON
The Cougars look to defend their title at the American Athletic Conference Championships on the Conservatory Course at Hammock Beach Resort on April 14-16 in Palm Coast, Fla. Last season, Houston enjoyed a team score of 11-under 277 in the Final Round to claim the title by 14 strokes.
The Cougars look for their fifth straight NCAA Regional appearance on May 6-8 at one of four sites across the nation: Auburn University Club (Auburn, Ala.); Tumble Creek Golf Club (Cle Elum, Wash.); Forest Akers Golf Courses – West (East Lansing, Mich.) and Jimmie Austin Golf Club (Norman, Okla.).
Houston has qualified for NCAA Regional play every year in which the team has been eligible to compete since the program was created for the 2013-14 season.
The NCAA Championships will be held May 17-22 at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
