Cougar distance team set for Cross Country opener
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Cross Country teams are on the road for the 2018 season opener in the Aggie Opener at Watts Cross Country Course in College Station, Texas, on Friday.
ABOUT THE AGGIE OPENER
The women's season officially kicks off with a 4.1K race around Watts Cross Country Course, beginning at 6:45 p.m., while the men's race will feature a 6K jaunt beginning at 7:15 p.m. Houston will compete against the host school Texas A&M as well as SFA, UTRGV and UTSA.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Houston women will see three newcomers make their collegiate debut Friday, including Maddy Castleberry, Megan DeRouen and Reagan Lobodzinski, while Hannah Barker, who debuted during the Track & Field season in 2017-18, will make her cross country debut as well.
Three Cougar student-athletes will return to the track for the women, led by junior Jahnavi Schneider who returns for her third campaign with Houston. Schneider helped lead the Cougars to a third-place finish at the Rice Invitational a season ago after taking 24th in 15:00.97.
Sophomores Brianna Nolen and Claudia Santos are also slated to make their returns Friday in College Station.
The Houston men will showcase four returners and two freshmen debuts at the season-opening meet. The Cougar team which features just two seniors, will be led by Aaron Hurd, who highlighted his 2017 season with a sixth-place finish at the HBU Dual in 2017.
Redshirt Junior Cameron Laverty returns to action, looking to build on a successful sophomore campaign, which saw him land in the top-10 at the HBU Dual, while Nicholas Fernandes and Nicholas Hamilton each return from redshirt seasons.
Freshmen in Gabriel Armijo and Devin Vallejo-Bannister will make their debut in the scarlet and white Friday.
