Cougars enjoy five home games in season’s first half
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball program and fifth-year Head Coach Ronald Hughey released their full 2018-19 non-conference schedule on Friday.
The Cougars will face nine road tests throughout the first half of the season and will play five times inside the city of Houston, including twice inside the Fertitta Center, the new home of Houston Basketball.
Houston's 2018-19 season tips off with a trip out west in a road-swing against California on Tuesday, Nov. 6, with tipoff slated for 2 p.m. CST. The meeting against the Bears marks the third all-time meeting for the two programs and the first since Nov. 25, 1983.
The Cougars open the home portion of the 2018-19 schedule with the first of three games inside H&PE Arena, when they meet Georgia Tech on Friday, Nov. 9. The meeting will be the first in program history for the two squads.
The following weekend, the Cougars face a pair of road matches, beginning with a trip to Ruston, La., to meet Louisiana Tech for the ninth time in program history on Nov. 14. Houston wraps up the short jaunt with a showdown at UIW on Nov. 16 in San Antonio.
A pair of rematches from the 2017-18 season follow on the schedule, beginning with the Cougars welcoming Boston College to H&PE Arena on Nov. 18, before taking a trip to the Big Apple to meet Columbia on Nov. 21 in New York. The Cougars look to avenge a tough 79-74 loss to Boston College from a year ago, and will look to stay undefeated against Columbia after a 77-53 win in the first meeting between the two programs last season.
The Cougars play their final game inside H&PE Arena on Nov. 24, when New Mexico makes the trip to Houston. The two programs will meet for the seventh time in history with Houston holding a perfect 2-0 record on its home court.
Two more road games wrap up the month of November and open December, starting with a trip to Fort Myers, Fla., to meet Florida Gulf Coast for the first time in program history on Nov. 28. The Cougars then head to Johnson City, Tenn., to play the return match of a home-and-home series with East Tennessee State on Dec. 1. Houston defeated ETSU 88-69 last season.
Wednesday, Dec. 5 with be a historic day for Houston Women's Basketball as they open the doors to the Fertitta Center for the first time when Texas A&M comes to town. Construction will conclude on the $60-million home of Houston Basketball in November, just in time for the Cougars to meet the Aggies for the 60th time in the two school's histories.
Following a 12-day break, the Cougars will again wrap up a pair of home-and-home series with return matches against UT Arlington on Dec. 17 inside the Fertitta Center and a trip to Fairfax, Va., on Dec. 21 to meet George Mason. The Cougars swept the two matchups a year ago, topping the Mavericks 62-58 in Arlington before defeating the Patriots 82-73 inside H&PE Arena.
The Cougars will conclude their non-conference season and the month of December with a road trip to meet Southern Miss on Dec. 30, in Hattiesburg, Miss. Houston and the Golden Eagles will meet for the 25th time in history and the first since an 81-70 win for Houston in 2013, when the two programs were members of Conference USA.
AMERICAN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE PLAY
In June, Houston learned its American Athletic Conference opponent draw, which will feature just one matchup against six of its conference opponents, while facing the remainder of the league twice. Houston will meet ECU, Tulane and Tulsa inside the Fertitta Center only, while facing Cincinnati, Memphis and Wichita State exclusively on the road.
Game times and broadcast information for all games will be announced soon.
