Houston Drops Exhibition at Rice

Cougars open season in New Orleans at the UNO Invitational across Aug. 24-25
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball program fell 3-0 (16-25, 15-25, 23-25) at Rice in an exhibition match on Friday afternoon inside Tudor Fieldhouse.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Rice jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but Houston rallied with an 8-5 surge, sparked by a kill from junior outside hitter Faith Squier, to cut it to 11-10. Unfortunately, three Cougar attack errors helped fuel a 4-0 run for the Owls, and they went on to lead by as much as nine points as Houston fell 25-16.
Set 2
After a pair of 3-0 swings to open the second set, the two teams traded points to 6-6. Three Houston attack errors fueled another 4-0 run for Rice, which led the rest of the way in a 25-15 decision to take a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Set 3
In the third set, the Owls jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but the Cougars rallied late. Down 24-19, freshman outside hitter Jordan Russell gave Houston back the serve with a kill, and sophomore outside hitter Silvia Pertens followed with three service aces to pull within one before the 25-23 final.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Junior outside hitter Megan Duncan led all with 11 kills.
• Junior libero Katie Karbo finished with a match-high 20 digs.
• Pertens finished totaled a match-high three service acesÂ
• Sophomore setter Abby Irvine finished with 17 digs, while senior setter Katie Krebs recorded nine assists and eight digs.
• Rice outhit Houston, .257-.051.
UP NEXT
Houston opens its 2018 season in New Orleans, taking on Murray State, Nebraska-Omaha and the host Privateers in the UNO Invitational across Aug. 24-25.
The Cougars play their home opener against Prairie View A&M on Aug. 28.
