AUSTIN, Texas â€" University of Houston senior Megan Thothong sank a team-high five birdies on the way to a 69 to lead the Cougars and tie for second following the First Round of the NCAA Austin Regional on Monday afternoon.
Thothong, who checks in at No. 55 in the latest Golfstat individual national rankings, became the first Cougar in program history to complete in four NCAA Regionals during her career.
Starting her day off No. 1 on the 6,341-yard, par-72 course at UT Golf Club, the Dallas native drained seven straight pars before making her first birdie of the day on the 159-yard, par-3 eighth hole.
After two more pars, Thothong enjoyed another birdie on the par-5 11th hole but gave the stroke back with a bogey on the next hole. She quickly rallied with two birdies in a 3-hole stretch on the par-5 14th hole and on the par-3 16th hole.
Although she endured a bogey on No. 17, the 2018 All-American Athletic Conference performer capped her round with her final birdie on No. 18 for a 69. She equaled the Cougars' low-round record in an NCAA Regional, set by current teammate Leonie Harm in the First and Final rounds at the 2016 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
Thothong (pronounced Toe-Tong) joined with second-ranked Maria Fassi (Arkansas), sixth-ranked Sophia Schurbert (Texas) and Gurleen Kaur (Baylor) in a group tied for second. No. 23 Maddie Szeryk (Texas A&M) held the first-day lead with a 68.
As a team, the 25th-ranked Cougars were tied for 14th with a score of 300.
No. 8 and host Texas held the First-Round lead with a score of 7-under 281, three strokes ahead of third-ranked Arkansas. No. 11 Michigan State (285), Virginia Tech (288), No. 35 Baylor (288), No. 41 BYU (291), No. 14 Florida (291), No. 19 Auburn (292), No. 38 Texas A&M (295), UTSA (298) and No. 30 Miami (Fla.) (298) rounded out the Top 10.
The Top-6 teams and Top-3 individuals not on a qualifying team from each NCAA Regional advance to the NCAA Championships, set for Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., on May 18-23. Houston is looking for is first team appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Harm, the 2018 American Athletic Conference Player of the Year, was tied for 55th with a 76, while senior and All-American Athletic Conference performer Courtney Tibiletti was tied for 70th with a 77. Making her NCAA postseason debut, sophomore Amanda Elich was tied for 77th at 78, while senior and All-American Athletic Conference honoree Allie Andersen was tied for 85th with an 80.
SECOND ROUND on TUESDAY
Tuesday's Second Round begins with an 8 a.m., split-tee start. For Tuesday's play, the Cougars will be in groups with student-athletes from ECU and No. 49 Texas Tech.
Andersen will start the day off No. 10 at 9 a.m., with Elich (9:10 a.m.), Tibiletti (9:20 a.m.), Harm (9:30 a.m.) and Thothong (following).
Wednesday's Final Round also begins with an 8 a.m., split-tee start. Houston's exact tee times will be determined based on their place in the team standings following Tuesday's play.
