
Houston Faces SMU and Prairie View A&M

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team travels to Dallas to take on SMU on Saturday, April 7. The match is slated to start at noon. The following day, April 8, Houston returns home to finish out the season in a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M. The first match starts at 11 a.m. and the second match starts at 3 p.m. The Cougars look to finish the season with a perfect record at home, currently standing at 12-0.
Houston won yet again at home on March 30 when they defeated ECU 4-1. The Cougars celebrated seniors Ana Glumac, Sveva Mazzari, and Alison Mills. The Cougars raced to a 1-0 overall match lead by winning two straight doubles matches. Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou won their match 6-3 over Ho Chiao Hsia and Nastja Rettich. Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari also picked up a win, and sealed the doubles point for the Cougars.
The Cougars won the first two singles matches to put them up 3-0 in the overall score. Senior Alison Mills highlighted these wins by winning on Senior Day 7-6, 6-3. ECU put together a string of wins to cut the Cougars lead to 3-2. Ana Glumac, another senior, came up huge with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 win over Annija Veinsteina to seal the match 4-2 for the Cougars. Sveva Mazzari's match went unfinished, but she will look to complete an undefeated season in singles during this weekend's matches.
ABOUT THE MUSTANGS
SMU has a 10-9 overall record and an 8-6 home record coming into this weekend's match. Their most recent match was a 4-1 loss to UT Arlington. They are led by Junior Karina Traxler, who is 8-5 in singles play and 8-1 in doubles when playing with Junior Liza Buss. The Mustangs have two matches remaining after this weekend, which are home matches against North Texas and University of Louisiana-Monroe.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS
Prairie View A&M currently holds a 7-17 overall record with three matches to be played before heading to Houston to face the Cougars. They were swept 7-0 against Louisiana-Lafayette in their most recent match. Senior Shaddae Findley led the team in singles with a 10-10 record last season. Senior Stacy Lackey and Junior Neharika Rama were 7-2 in doubles last season when playing together. The Panthers currently have yet to win a road match with an 0-11 record on the season.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars head to Dallas on Wednesday, April 18 to play in the first round of the American Championship. The quarterfinals are set to be played on April 19, with the semifinals being played the next day. The championship match will be on April 20.
