STORRS, Conn. -- The University of Houston Softball team split its American Athletic Conference doubleheader at UConn, winning 8-0 in five innings before falling 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Burrill Family Field.
With the split, the Cougars move to 31-19 overall and 9-8 in The American, while the Huskies slide to 19-31 and 4-13. The 31 wins are the most in the Head Coach Kristin Vesely era, bettering last season's win total of 30.
Sophomore third baseman Sarah Queen went 4-for-6, posting a pair of multi-hit games, finishing with two doubles, one walk, two RBI and three runs scored across the doubleheader. Freshman designated player Aspen Howie turned in a 3-for-6 afternoon with a triple -- the first of her career -- walk and three RBI.
In the circle, junior Savannah Heebner tossed a two-hitter in the first game to improve to 21-8. She scattered two hits while walking one and striking out five for her 10th shutout of the season. Her 21 wins and 10 shutouts tie Amanda Crabtree (2011) for the third most all-time at Houston in a single season in both categories. Overall, the victory marked the 45th of Heebner's career and moved her into sole possession of the fifth most wins in program history, breaking her tie with Diedre Outon (2011-14).
In the second game, sophomore Trystan Melancon took the loss, allowing four runs across three and two-third innings pitched. Junior Presley Bell tossed the final two and one-third innings, limiting the Huskies to just one hit with no walks and one strikeout.
With her start in the second game, junior catcher Brooke Vannoy made her 100th-consecutive start behind the plate dating back to Houston's 7-3 win over Boston College on Feb. 12, 2017, at Cougar Softball Stadium.

COUGAR SOFTBALL STADIUM UPGRADES
Thanks to a record year for the Diamond Club, Houston Softball announced the addition of an LED, Daktronics video board (completed) and indoor practice facility as major upgrades to Cougar Softball Stadium.
According to Daktronics, the new outfield video board is the sixth largest at an on-campus softball stadium in the country and the second largest in the state of Texas. The board, which sits just beyond the left-field wall, stands 29-feet-3.1-inches tall and measure 24-feet-4.0-inches wide with 576 square feet of space (24-feet by 24-feet) for live video, instant replays, statistics and scoring information, graphics and animations, and sponsor messages. The display features a 13HD pixel layout for crisp, clear imagery for a great view from every seat at the stadium.
The indoor facility, which will replace the current batting cage down the right-field line, will measure 70-feet by 80-feet. The 5,600-square-foot space will feature five batting cages, measuring 60-feet long by 15-feet wide each, with retractable nets for the space to be used in a variety of ways. The facility will have a synthetic turf floor and will be temperature controlled.
In total, the two capital projects represent $1.2 million in upgrades.
