GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Houston Baseball rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to win 5-4 at No. 7 ECU on Friday to open the weekend American Athletic Conference series on the road.

With the win, the Cougars improved to 26-16 overall and 11-5 in American play, which places them in sole possession of first place, while ECU fell to 30-10 and 8-5 in league action.

HOUSTON HITS

Connor Hollis singled to lead off the game to extend his on-base streak to 15 games.
Tyler Bielamowicz each extended their on-base streak to 15 games.
Grayson Padgett extended his on-base streak to 12 straight games.
Houston improved to 10-7 in 1-run games this season.
Trey Cumbie improved to 5-2 on the year and 4-1 in league action.
Carter Henry picked up his sixth save of the year and fifth in conference play.
Wendell Champion II belted his first home run of the season and second of his career, a three-run shot to put the Cougars ahead for good in the sixth inning.

Houston out hit ECU, 11-8 and had five extra base hits, led by Wendell Champion II's three-RBI night. Champion had a double and home run, while Connor Hollis had a three-hit day with two doubles.

Jared Triolo and Cooper Coldiron each had an RBI.

Starter Trey Cumbie improved to 5-2 on the year and 4-1 in league play with his outing on Friday. The southpaw allowed four runs on six hits with two walks in 6.2 innings of work. He fanned four.

Sophomore closer Carter Henry picked up his sixth save of the year and fifth in league play after tossing 2.1 innings out of the bullpen. The righty was dominant, surrendering two hits and three walks with three strikeouts.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | ECU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the third. The Pirates used a solo home run and a two-out, two-run single up the middle for the three-run advantage.

4th | Wendell Champion II doubled down the left field line with two outs, scoring Tyler Bielamowicz, who reached on a fielder's choice to put the Cougars on the board and down 3-1 in the fourth.

5th | The Cougars added another run in the fifth after Connor Hollis doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a fly out by Lael Lockhart Jr. and scored on an RBI-groundout by Jared Triolo to make it a 3-2 game.

ECU responded with a run in the latter half following a lead off double, stolen base and a sac fly to put the Pirates ahead, 4-2.

6th | Houston produced a big sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by Wendell Champion II, his first of the year and second of his career. The inning began with a walk by Tyler Bielamowicz followed by a double by Grayson Padgett. Cooper Coldiron plated Bielamowicz with a sac fly and Champion drove in a pair with his long ball for the 5-4 lead.

The Cougars and Pirates will continue their three-game series with Game 2 on Saturday at 3 p.m. CT and will wrap at 10:30 a.m. CT on Sunday.
