
Houston Sweeps UConn 4-0

DALLAS â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis Team took down UConn with a 4-0 sweep in the First Round of the American Championship on Wednesday in Dallas. The No. 6 seed Cougars didn't drop a set during the match and move on to play the No. 3 seed Wichita State, on Thursday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
Lauren Alter and Alison Mills started off doubles strong for the Cougars with a 6-1 win over Zaina Zaki and Summer Walker. They improved their winning streak to four in doubles when playing together this season.
Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou clinched the doubles point for the Cougars with a 6-3 victory over Jacqueline Lazaro and Gillian Perrotta. They improve to 9-2 on the season in doubles.
Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari's match went unfinished due to Houston clinching the doubles point. They were leading 4-3 over Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva and Jacquelyn Fitz-Randolph at the time.
With Houston leading 1-0 going into singles, the Cougars continued their winning ways. Alter raced to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Summer Walker to start singles. The Cougars led 2-0 in the match after this victory.
Nicolaou followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0 win of her own against Zaina Zaki. She moves on to an outstanding 12-3 record on the season in singles.
Ana Glumac clinched the 4-0 sweep for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Cassie Chung. With this win the Cougars move on to the next round of the American Championship.
There were three matches remaining when Houston clinched the match. Dimitrova led Pletnyeva 6-3, 5-1, Mazzari led Fitz-Randolph 6-1, 4-2, and Mills was up on Lazaro 6-3, 4-2.
ABOUT THE SHOCKERS
Wichita State went 16-7 on the spring season and are the No. 3 seed in the American Championship. They racked up impressive wins over Missouri, Oklahoma, and Kansas State, who were all ranked in the top-50. In conference play this season, the Shockers beat SMU, but lost to UCF and Tulsa. They are led by junior Sandra Honigova, who went 15-3 in singles on the season. For doubles, Gabriela Porubin and Sarvinoz Saidhujaeva led the Shockers with a 7-1 record.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
With the win over UConn, the Cougars advance to the next round to play against Wichita State in the quarterfinals. The match is scheduled for Thursday, at 3 p.m. in Dallas.
