HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team travels to Dallas to play in the 2018 American Tennis Championship on Wednesday, April 18. They will face the 11th seeded UConn Huskies in the first round, which is slated for a 9 a.m. start. The Cougars are the No. 6 seed in the tournament.
The Cougars finished the regular season a week ago with a doubleheader win against Prairie View A&M. They won both matches in a sweep, 4-0. Houston finished the season with a 19-3 overall record and an undefeated home record at 14-0. The undefeated home record matched their best mark since the 2006 season.
Throughout the season the Cougars racked up a number of dominating performances. Early in the season the Cougars beat Nevada and Arizona in a series of road matches. They battled with powerhouse Rice midseason and were one match from winning, and in a span of three weeks, Houston went on a six-match winning streak. One of the wins in the streak included a home match against UConn, in which the Cougars won the match 5-2.
Sveva Mazzari headlined singles play throughout the spring season, finishing with an impressive 18-1 record. For doubles, Mazzari and Tsveta Dimitrova went 13-2, and Lauren Alter and Alison Mills posted a 13-3 record.
ABOUT THE HUSKIES
UConn finished the spring season with a 10-10 overall record. They went 0-5 in conference and had a losing record in both home and away matches including non-conference matches. Most of their wins came from neutral site matches, in which they posted a 6-1 record. A key win for the Huskies came on April 7, when they beat Boston University, 4-3.
Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva led the team in singles with a 15-5 record. She has been on a streak lately, going 7-3 in her last ten singles matches. She went undefeated when playing with J. Fitz-Randolph in doubles, putting up a 10-0 mark.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The winner of the First Round match will move on to face the No. 3 seed, Wichita State. That match will be Thursday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
