Monie Wins Shot Put at Texas Relays

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field teams wrapped up the third day of action at the 91st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Friday in Austin.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston opened the morning session in impressive fashion after qualifying with the fastest time in the preliminary round of the men's 4x100-meter relay. Houston raced around in the 400-meter relay in 39.62 to win the final heat and book a spot in Saturday's final.
Nora Monie picked up an individual victory for the Cougars in her first of two events on the weekend, the women's shot put. Competing in the 'B' section of the event, Monie used her final attempt to mark a best of 50-0.75 (15.26m) to come from behind and win the event. Freshman Priscilla Adejokun finished seventh in the event with a mark of 46-0.75 (14.04m).
Junior Amere Lattin picked up a second-place finish in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles. After qualifying with the fastest time in the preliminary rounds, Lattin returned to run a personal-best 50.29 to pick up the silver. The top-2 times of the event are the top-2 times in the nation this season, as Lattin moves to No. 2 in the NCAA on the year.
Lattin opened the morning in the straight-track hurdle race, where he qualified for Saturday's final. Lattin ran the eighth-fastest time of the preliminary rounds of the 110-meter hurdles in a season-best 13.93 to book the berth.
Jared Kerr picked up the Houston men's first top-5 finish of the morning in the 'B' section of the men's long jump. Kerr used his first attempt to travel a season-best 24-9.75 (7.56m) to take fifth in the event.
Also in the jumps, Tonye'cia Burks made her return to the runway with a top-10 finish in the 'A' section of the women's triple jump. Burks' top mark traveled 41-10.5 (12.76m) to place her ninth overall.
Houston added a top-10 finish on the track, with a ninth-place run in the men's sprint medley relay. Houston's squad of Trent McDonald (200m), Nick Alexander (200m), Quivell Jordan (400m) and Nicholas Hamilton (800m) ran 3:23.94.
Houston wrapped the second day in each of the women's and men's distance medley relays. The women took 10th overall with a time of 12:06.38, while the men finished fourth in 9:47.21.
ABOUT THE TEXAS RELAYS
Each of the four days of the Texas Relays will air live via the Longhorn Network and as well as ESPN3.com. Thursday's coverage begins at 6 p.m., while Friday will have two separate broadcasts, 9:30 a.m. â€" 12:30 p.m., and 7â€"8:30 p.m., while Saturday's coverage will run from 1:30-5:30 p.m.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Field action opens the final day of competition as well, with Monie in the second of her two events, the women's discus at 10 a.m. Monie enters with the 34th-best mark of the season at 169-0 (51.51m).
The final day of running action opens with the relays and each of the men's and women's teams competing in the 4x200-meter relay beginning at noon. Finals of the 4x100-meter relay will follow shortly after, beginning at 1:30 p.m.
Individual finals kick off with the 100- and 110-meter hurdles events beginning with the women at 2:10 p.m. Following the hurdles, the finals of the 100-meter dash will take place at 2:55, where Cameron Burrell will also compete in the invitational of the men's 100-meter dash to cap the straight-track races.
Elijah Hall and Jacarias Martin will make their individual outdoor debuts in the invitational of the 200-meter dash at 3:55 p.m., while the 4x400-meter relay will end the show at 4:05 p.m.
Field events on the final day will open at 3 p.m., for Houston with Samiyah Samuels and Tonye'cia Burks in the 'A' section of the long jump. Samuels recently earned American Athletic Conference Field Athlete of the Week honors after posting the fifth-best mark this season at 20-7.75 (6.29m). Antwan Dickerson will compete in the men's event simultaneously, entering with the 16th-best collegiate mark at 24-9.25 (7.55m).
Competition will conclude in the field with a pair of Houston men in the 'A' section of the shot put. Felipe Valencia holds the No. 25 mark of the season entering competition at 58-11.25 (17.96m), while Cameron Cornelius ranks 70th at 55-3.0 (16.84m).
