
Houston Wins on Senior Day

HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis Team improved to 12-0 at home with a win over ECU, on Friday, continuing their best home start since the 2006 season.
The Cougars also celebrated Senior Day on Friday, in which they honored the careers of Ana Glumac, Sveva Mazzari, and Alison Mills.
Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou started off doubles with a 6-3 win over Ho Chiao Hsia and Nastja Rettich. Glumac is now 9-2 when playing doubles this season.
Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari won their match 6-4 over Alisa Diercksen and Celia Ruiz to clinch the doubles point for the Cougars. The duo is now 11-2 on the season when playing together.
Lauren Alter and Mills' match went unfinished due to the Cougars clinching the doubles point. They led 6-5 over Lisa Hofbauer and Sarah Sarjoo.
Leading 1-0 going into singles, the Cougars were faced with stiff competition from the Pirates. However, Alter picked up the first singles win for the Cougars with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Nastja Rettich. She improves to 14-1 on the season in singles, and the victory gave Houston a 2-0 lead in the overall match after this result.
Mills followed suit and celebrated senior day with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Sarah Sarjoo. The victory put the Cougars up 3-0 in the overall match.
However, ECU battled back to make the score 3-2 with two straight wins. Nicolaou fell 7-5, 7-5 to Alisa Diercksen, and Dimitrova lost in a very close match 4-6, 6-2, 6-7 to Celia Ruiz. This was only the third loss by Dimitrova in singles this season.
Glumac embraced Senior Day by winning her match and winning the contest for Houston, 4-2. She defeated Annija Veinsteina 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.
Mazzari's match went unfinished with the Cougars clinching the match. She was trailing Lisa Hofbauer 6-7, 7-6, 0-3 at that time. She remains undefeated on the season in singles play.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars travel to Dallas to take on conference rival SMU on Saturday, April 7. The match is slated to start at noon. The next day, April 8, features a doubleheader against Prairie View A&M back home at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility. The match times are set for 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
