Cumbie Named to GS Award Watch List

FULL LIST -- Golden Spikes Preseason Watch List
DURHAM, N.C. -- After a banner 2017 season, Houston Baseball junior Trey Cumbie was recognized among the nation's best, being named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award Preseason list, the organization announced Friday.
The award honors the top amateur baseball player in the country each season and features 55 of the nation's top amateur players on this year's list. 15 different collegiate conferences were represented on the list. The American Athletic Conference had five representatives. Joining Cumbie were Wichita State's Alec Bohm (3B, Jr.) and Greyson Jenista (1B/OF, Jr.), USF's Shane McClanahan (LHP, Jr.) and UConn's Tim Cate (LHP, Jr.).

ABOUT GOLDEN SPIKES AWARD
Since 1978, USA Baseball has honored the top amateur baseball player in the country with the Golden
Spikes Award. Following the first-ever presentation of the Award to Bob Horner of Arizona State, the Golden Spikes Award has been presented each year to the player who exhibits exceptional athletic ability and exemplary sportsmanship. The 2017 Golden Spikes Award winner was Brendan McKay from the University of Louisville. Past winners of this prestigious award include current Major League Baseball players such as Andrew Benintendi ('15), Kris Bryant ('13), Mike Zunino ('12), Trevor Bauer ('11), Bryce Harper ('10), Stephen Strasburg ('09), Buster Posey ('08), David Price ('07) and Alex Gordon ('05). ABOUT Trey Cumbie
Cumbie, the reigning American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year and All-American was recently tabbed one of the nation's best starting pitchers as he was named an NCWBA Preseason First Team All-American earlier this week.
Cumbie is no stranger to national preseason lists as he was honored as a Second Team honoree by Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball as well as being named theAmerican Athletic Conference's Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
Cumbie, the staff ace, is fresh off a sophomore campaign that was highlighted by him being named the American Pitcher of the Year and a First Team All-American by NCBWA.
The Lufkin, Texas native, led the American Athletic Conference with a 2.04 ERA and a 10-2 record in 15 starts. The southpaw fanned 82 in 101.1 innings and had four complete games to his name in 2017.

Cumbie became the first 10-game winner since Austin Pruitt went 10-5 back in 2013, while also becoming the fourth Cougar to be named Conference Pitcher of the Year in program history, but first since 2006. He joins C-USA Pitchers of the Year Brad Lincoln (2006), Brad Sullivan (2002) and Kyle Crowell (2000, 1999) representing the league's top honor on the pitching side.
