Houston Falls in 15-Inning Heartbreaker

FULLERTON, Calif. -- Houston Baseball pitching struck out 19 and held No. 13 Cal State Fullerton to just two hits during Friday's 15-inning marathon, but the Cougars dropped a 2-1 contest to open the weekend series on the road.
Houston is now 2-2 on the year, while Cal State Fullerton picked up its first win, moving to 1-4.
HOUSTON HITS
- Starter Trey Cumbie retired 19 in a row from he 1st -- 7th innings.
- Houston pitching managed to retired 21 Titans in a row from the 1st -- 8th innings.
- Cumbie struck out 10 for his second straight 10+ strikeout game, last vs. Holy Cross (12).
- Connor Hollis has a hit in all four games this season.
- Hollis has doubled in all four games this season.
- Brayson Hursdman retired 13 hitters in a row (10th -- 15th innings).
- Hurdsman tied his career high in strikeouts with seven and tossed a career-long 5.1 innings.
- The Houston pitching staff struck out 19 to make it four straight games with at least 10 strikeouts as a staff.
- The Cougars held Cal State Fullerton to just two hits through 15 innings.
- Dating back to the 2017 season, Coldiron has now reached base in 13 straight games.
- Houston played its second straight extra inning game.

Trey Cumbie was stellar once again in his second start of 2018. The southpaw struck out 10 in 6.2 innings of work without allowing a walk or run and just one hit. He managed to retired 19 straight Titans in a stretch where the score was still a firm, 0-0. He received his second straight no decision.
RHP Carter Henry relieved Cumbie and was just as good, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts before handing the ball over to LHP Brayson Hurdsman in the 10th inning.
Hurdsman was untouchable as he went a career-long 5.1 innings, striking out a career-tying seven strikeouts. He didn't allow a hit and the run came following a leadoff walk.
RHP Joey Pulido took over in the 15th with one out, but a wild pitch late pushed the winning run across.
KEY INNINGS
8th | Cal State Fullerton broke open the 0-0 stalemate in the eighth when it put the game's first run on the board. With bases loaded and one out, the Titans scratched across the run on a strikeout -- wild pitch.
9th | Houston responded with a run of its own in the top of the ninth when Connor Hollis led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Jared Triolo followed with a walk and then pinch hitter Landon Etzel moved the runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt, allowing Drew Minter to plate Hollis from third on a 5-3 groundout to make it 1-1.
15th | Cal State Fullerton found a way to score for the second time Friday without recording a hit. The Titans used a leadoff walk in the 15th to find themselves with bases loaded and one out, allowing a wild pitch to account for the winning run.

Houston and Cal State Fullerton continue its series with Game 2 slated for 6 pm CT Saturday. The two will wrap up the weekend at 2 pm CT Sunday.
