PHILADELPHIA - Junior guard Corey Davis Jr. poured in 20 points with six 3-pointers, and senior forward Devin Davis recorded his second straight double-double to lead the University of Houston Men's Basketball program to an 80-59 win over Temple inside the Liacouras Center on Sunday.
The Cougars scored the game's first 15 points and never allowed the Owls to move to within 13 points the rest of the way. Houston limited Temple to only 31.0 percent (9-of-29) shooting in the first half on the way to a 41-20 lead and outrebounded the Owls 53-22 with17 offensive rebounds.
Houston built as much as a 32-point lead midway through the second half
After finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a home win against No. 5/5 Cincinnati earlier this week, Devin Davis continued that pace with 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Indianapolis native drained 7-of-16 shots from the field and both free throw attempts to record the sixth double-double of his career and his fifth of the season.
Corey Davis Jr. tied his career high for the second time with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 6-of-8 from behind the 3-point line. The Lafayette, La., native wasted no time in making at least one 3-pointer in his 22nd straight game, burying a long-range try from the left baseline just 21 seconds into the contest.
Davis moved into a tie for ninth in Houston single-season history with Byron Smith, who posted a pair of 22-game streaks during his career from 1989 to 1991.
With the win, the Cougars moved to 21-5 overall and 11-3 in American Athletic Conference play. Combined with Wichita State's road win over league leader Cincinnati on Sunday, the Cougars remain tied for second with the Shockers in league play, one game behind the Bearcats.
The 2017-18 Cougars also became the 22nd team in school history to enjoy at least 21 wins in a single season.
Temple fell to 15-12 overall and 7-8 in league play.
Junior point guard Galen Robinson Jr. added 12 points with a game-high seven assists and only one turnover, while sophomore guard Armoni Brooks came off the bench to post 11 points with four rebounds and a pair of 3-pointers.
Quinton Rose and Nate Pierre-Louis each posted 13 points to lead Temple in scoring. J.P Moorman II added 10 points with a game-high five rebounds in the loss.
