Â
WHAT TO WATCH
Houston will see seven NCAA All-American's hit the track on Saturday, including two-time NCAA Champions and NCAA 4x100-meter record holders John Lewis III and Mario Burke in the 60-meter dash.
Â
Outdoor All-American in the 200-meter dash Nicholas Alexander will make his sophomore debut in the 60 as well, while a pair of outdoor All-Americans in Brianne Bethel (100-meters and 200-meters) and Samiyah Samuels (long jump) will run the 60 on the women's side.
Â
Seven-time All-American Amere Lattin will open his senior season in the 60-meter hurdles. Indoor heptathlon All-American Nathaniel Mechler will run the hurdles as well.
Houston will see 16 student-athletes make their debuts in the red & white, including freshman Triston Gibbons in the shot put. Gibbons, who hails from Bridgetown, Barbados, holds the Barbadian National Junior Record in the shot put and discus and was the bronze medalist in each event at the CARIFTA games a year ago.
Â
A trio of former teammates will compete in the sprints for the first time collegiately on Saturday, including Jais Smith, who finished his senior season ranked No. 4 in the country in the outdoor 100-meter dash. Smith will run the 60 on Saturday, while Jordan Booker and Edward Sumler IV will run the 200-meter dash. The trio combined to win the USATF Junior Olympic 4x100-meter Relay national championship during high school.
Â
Houston receives a big boost in the throws with the return of redshirt junior thrower Mikaila Martin. Martin, at one time the school's record holder in the outdoor hammer throw and a 2017 NCAA West Regional qualifier, competed in the early meets of the 2017-18 season before a season-ending injury.
