Improvements include move to Fertitta Center and training in Athletics/Alumni Center
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Volleyball program will call the $60-million Fertitta Center home as well as have new practice courts inside Athletics/Alumni Center starting in 2019.
"The improvements to Volleyball's facilities will provide our student-athletes with a tremendous advantage as the University's continued commitment to compete nationally in all of our sports programs," Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said.
The Cougars, who have called Athletics/Alumni Center home for matches on a full-time basis since 2004, played games inside the former Hofheinz Pavilion from the program's inception in 1967 up through the entirety of the 2003 season. Houston last played in the arena in 2006, when it served as the host site for the Conference USA Volleyball Championship.
Inside Fertitta Center, the Cougars will play on a Taraflex surface. Build out of the floor is slated to start at the end of the spring.

"The Fertitta Center is a game changer for the Volleyball program," Head Coach Kaddie Platt said. "The state-of-the-art facility is loud, bright and has an intimate atmosphere perfect for volleyball. This is exactly what is needed to make big strides in the volleyball program.
"The team attended the Fertitta Center's inaugural game and their anticipation for competing in this amazing arena is growing every time we step in the building. We are beyond excited to be in the Fertitta Center in August of 2019."
Houston will also move its team area into Fertitta Center. A 4,500 square foot space just up the tunnel from the court will house the Cougars' locker room, player's lounge, nutrition center as well as a satellite training room.
The locker room remodel will start in January and run through May 2019.
"Volleyball has a rich tradition of NCAA success among our women's team sports," Senior Associate Athletics Director for Capital Projects T.J. Meagher said. "The Fertitta Center project has enabled a situation where Volleyball will have a new competition venue with a specific playing surface, team area and dedicated training area. The collection of improvements will be a seismic change for the Volleyball program."

In Athletics/Alumni Center, Houston will renovate its former competition area into three dedicated practice courts for volleyball, which can be utilized year round by the program. The three courts will be engineered by Connor Sports' VIP court system.
"The Fertitta Center, team area, training area, Taraflex floor and practice courts will all help us compete with other programs for the best athletes in Texas, the U.S. and internationally," Platt said. "We are thankful to our administration for the commitment to the Volleyball program and the opportunity to compete and train in such amazing facilities."
ON TARAFLEX
Manufactured by Gerflor, Taraflex has provided the playing surface for 11 consecutive Olympic Games and is the official floor supplier to the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). Taraflex has also long been the sports flooring of choice in the U.S. market, with 50 million square feet installed in over 70,000 gymnasiums nationwide.
Taraflex is globally renowned for its superior long-term safety features, protection of athletes and enhanced grip and slide for the best playability. The padding, which meets the ASTM F2772 certification for indoor sports flooring, makes diving, sliding and jumping easier on the players' bodies, while its sleek and durable design turns any facility into a volleyball-centric arena.
ABOUT THE FERTITTA CENTER
With a capacity of 7,039, the Fertitta Center will feature a premium club and courtside club as well as a reconfigured bowl with mid-court seating closing to game action. The facility also includes floor-level seating opposite the team benches for UH students.
The University also will transform an area adjacent to the Fertitta Center into Hofheinz Pavilion, where fans will be greeted by a bronze statue of former Harris Country Judge Roy Hofheinz.
The renovation was made possible through a generous $20-million donation from University of Houston System Board of Regents Chairman Tillman J. Fertitta and his family in 2016.
