After Houston fell behind 34-13 to Pitt with 6:14 left in Houston's last appearance in the Armed Forces Bowl, Ward threw three touchdowns in the final 3:41 including a 25-yard pass to Deontay Greenberry with 59 seconds remaining. The two connected on the following two-point conversion before the Houston defense held on for a turnover on downs for Houston's 10th bowl win.
Following Ward's first and second touchdowns in the late flurry, Houston recovered two onside kicks, the first recovered by defensive back Tyler White and the second by running back Kenneth Farrow, who also had 103 rushing yards and both of Houston's rushing touchdowns.
