2019 class features well-rounded talent
HOUSTON – With the departure of a strong senior class this upcoming season, University of Houston Softball head coach Kristin Vesely has signed four National Letters of Intent for the 2019 class and will compete in the 2020 season.
"We have another strong recruiting class coming in with their athleticism, power and a tough mentality," Vesely said of the 2019 class.
One of the third-year head coach's goals with this signing class was to add depth and begin to continue the legacy from the 2015 class. Below is a breakdown of each player that was signed as well as an in-depth look at what Vesely believes each one brings to the table.
Paige Hulsey | Infield | Klein, Texas | Klein Oak HS
Vesely on Hulsey: "Paige is a highly athletic player and projected to vie for a spot in the middle infield. What I like about her is that she is out-hustling, out-playing and giving extraordinary effort on every play, which embarks the Houston style of play."
A three-time varsity letterman who led her high school team to a district championship in 2016 … Earned All-District honors in 2017 and 2018, where her team finished as a regional quarter finalist … Received All-Academic accolades from 2017-18 … Ended the 2018 season with a .409 batting average … Has won 62 games for her high school over the course of three years … Daughter of Andy and Heather Hulsey … Lists her parents as her biggest influence … Claims to pass out on roller coasters, as she is deathly afraid of heights.
Logan Hulon | Pitcher/Infield | Dripping Springs, Texas | Dripping Springs HS
Vesely on Hulon: "We are really excited to add Logan to our pitching staff. She is known in the state of Texas for her velocity and will be a good compliment to the staff. She is used to carrying a heavy load and is a true competitor, playing to win from the first pitch to the last."
Named the District 26-5A Pitcher of the Year in 2017 and 2018 … A 2017 Academic All-District honoree … Earned a spot in the TGCA All-Star game from 2017-18 … Holds a Marble Falls High School record with 300 strikeouts in the 2017 season … Transferred to Dripping Springs HS before receiving Texas Sports Writers second-team honors in 2018 … Suffered just two losses in the circle in 2018, where her 12 wins paced her squad to a spot in the area finals … Finished the 2018 campaign with an unfathomable ERA of 0.63 … Helped lead to high school cross country team to a district championship in 2018 … Daughter of Tim and Shawna Hulon … Lists Jennie Finch as her biggest influence … Has a "squirrelphobia" because of when she was attacked by a squirrel when she was four-years-old.
Britaney Shaw | Infield | Galveston, Texas | Galveston, HS
Vesely on Shaw: "Britaney has a powerful bat and has the ability to change the game with one swing and drive in RBIs. I cannot wait to have her start our strength and conditioning program on a daily basis, so we can max out her potential."
A two-time district Offensive Player of the Year, as well as a district MVP … Received All-County honors twice in her career … Put together a career batting average of .458 to go along with 16 career home runs and 55 RBIs … Holds a career OBP of .563 and a slugging percentage of 1.033 … Also played for her high school volleyball, and track and field team, where she holds the school record for longest shot put … Daughter of Harold and Yvonne Shaw … Plans to major in pre-med, with aspirations to become an anesthesiologist.
Mackenzie Comeaux | Infield/Outfield | Sour Lake, Texas | Hardin Jefferson HS
Vesely on Comeaux: "Mackenzie was a needed addition to the 2019 class. Once we saw her play, we wanted to make sure she wore a Houston uniform. She embraces our style by playing incredibly hard. She is a true athlete and an instant leader on the field with her presence."
A three-sport athlete her first three years of high school … Has batted near the .600 mark through her first three softball seasons … Received First-Team All-District, as well as Second-Team All-State honors, as a freshman … Awarded Second-Team All-District honors twice in her high school career … Competed for her high school volleyball, and track and field teams … Daughter of Lee and Stephanie Comeaux … Worked for ASPCA, an animal rescue service, and returned over 100 animals to their owners during Hurricane Harvey.
