Will serve as Volunteer Assistant Coach
HOUSTON – Sarah O'Brien will join the University of Houston Softball coaching staff as the program's volunteer assistant coach.
"We are excited to complete our staff with the addition of O'Brien," Houston Softball head coach Kristin Vesely said. "Her passion and energy will add to the dynamic we have, and she will provide a positive impact on the program's culture. With her background, she will be able to immediately jump in with our student-athletes and staff."
In her role with the Cougars, O'Brien will serve as the camp director and scout film to help develop game plans. O'Brien will also work with the outfielders, assist with the offense and act as one of the base coaches during games.
"I want to thank Coach Vesely for the opportunity to be a part of the successful program that she continues to build at the University of Houston," O'Brien said. "The vast knowledge, passion for the game, and competitive edge that she and her staff bring to Houston is inspiring and something that I am blessed to become a part of. I am beyond excited to start this new chapter of my life and continue to grow and compete at the highest level of collegiate softball."
O'Brien comes to Houston with years of coaching experience underneath her belt, having spent more than five seasons as an assistant coach at Texas Lutheran University (TLU) in Seguin, Texas. O'Brien also worked as one of the athletics department's facilities directors.
During her time at TLU, O'Brien was part of a coaching staff that earned ASC West Division Coaching of Staff the Year honors, having helped lead the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Division III postseason appearance in 2014. That same year, TLU won the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference with a 21-1 SCAC record, posting an undefeated mark in the conference tournament as well.
With the help of O'Brien, 2014 sparked a run of three consecutive NCAA Tournament regional berths, appearing in the regional finals twice during that span. Along with her time helping lead the Bulldogs, O'Brien also taught as an adjunct professor in the Kinesiology department at TLU.
Prior to beginning her coaching career, O'Brien played two seasons for UIW in San Antonio, Texas. She quickly became a standout with the Cardinals, having started both seasons in which she competed and earning All-Conference honors in 2011. After leading IUW to a conference championship title in 2012, she was awarded with All-Tournament honors.
Originally from Kennewick, Wash., O'Brien earned her bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with minors in both special education and reading from UIW. She completed her masters of arts in teaching at UIW in 2014.
