Houston Falls to Tulane

Irvine and Duncan both record double-doubles
NEW ORLEANS – The University of Houston volleyball team concluded its five-match road trip on Sunday, dropping its contest with Tulane in four sets (19-25, 25-23, 23-25, 13-25).
The Cougars move to 13-9 on the season and 0-7 in American Athletic Conference play, as the Green Wave sit at 15-7 and 3-4 against conference opponents.
GAME 1: HOUSTON 1, TULANE 3
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1
Houston kept pace with Tulane's defense, which is one of the best in the conference, but an 8-1 run from the Green Wave game them an 8-4 advantage. After Tulane stretched its lead to five, Houston was forced to call its first timeout of the match at 15-10. Trailing by eight late in the set, the Cougars managed to fight off a trio of set points, but the Green Wave was able to hold off Houston's late surge, taking the opening set 25-19.
Set 2
Through the help of sophomore setter Abby Irvine, who posted a double-double at the 7-4 mark, the Cougars were able to build themselves a three-point lead early. After Tulane took their first lead of the set at 15-14, the two teams traded blows all the way to 20-20 before the Green Wave was forced to call a timeout. From there, the Cougars scored five of the final eight points to win the second frame 25-23 and even the match score at intermission.
Set 3
After the two teams found themselves in a seesaw battle to begin the set, Tulane strung together a 7-2 scoring run to take a 13-9 lead, but the Cougars brought themselves back inside striking distance. Thanks to a service ace from senior setter Katie Krebs, Houston pulled to within a pair at 18-16. Houston battled with Tulane all the way to the very end of the set, but ultimately game up short, as the Green Wave won the third set 25-23 to go up 2-1 in match play.
Set 4
Tulane jumped out to 5-2 lead early and after the Green Wave stretched its advantage to seven points at 12-5, Tulane never looked back and cruised to the 25-13 set win and 3-1 match victory.

The Cougars return to the Athletics/Alumni Center for the first time in three weeks on Friday, Oct. 19 when Houston plays host to Tulsa. First serve for that match is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.

- Sophomore Abby Irvine recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 21 assists and 20 digs. She has posted a double-double in six of her past eight matches, including four straight and all but two conference contests. This is the second time in her career she reached the 20-assist, 20-dig mark in a match.
- Junior outside hitter Megan Duncan led the Cougars with 15 kills in the match, the 11th time this season she has led the team in kills. She also tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 10 digs.
- Junior libero Katie Karbo now has 11 matches with more than 20 digs, including four contests surpassing the 25-dig plateau.
- Freshman middle blocker Kendall Haywood tied her career-high with three solo blocks. She finished the match with six total blocks, the ninth time in her young career she has done so.
