SAN ANTONIO, Texas – University of Houston senior All-American Leonie Harm and junior Amanda Elich each posted 69s Sunday to lead the Cougars to a second-place team finish after the First Round at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational.
Competing as an individual, senior Maddy Rayner also enjoyed a sub-par round, shooting a 2-under 70 to stand in sixth on the 6,233-yard, par-72 AT&T Canyons Course at TPC San Antonio.
As a team, the Cougars fired a score of 3-under 285 to tie with Marshall for second. It was the team's lowest round of the young season and put Houston six strokes back of first-day leader TCU.
Tennessee (288), UTSA (291), North Texas (298), Oral Roberts (300), UAB (310) and UIW (313) rounded out the field.
Harm and Elich each drained four birdies with only one bogey in their respective first rounds to tie for fourth after the first 18 holes. Starting on No. 1, Harm made birdie on two of her first three holes and overcame a bogey on No. 6 to sink birdies on two of the final three holes of her first nine.
The Gerlingen, Germany, native and two-time NCAA Championships qualifier finished her day with nine straight pars.
After four straight pars to start her round, Elich enjoyed back-to-back birdies on Nos. 5-6 and added another birdie on No. 13. Despite a birdie on the par-3 16th hole, the West Linn., Ore., native rebounded with a birdie on the next hole for a career-best round.
She topped her previous low of 73, set during the Second Round at the Trinity Forest Invitational on Oct. 30, 2017.
Rayner started play with six straight birdies before enduring a bogey on the par-4 seventh hole. However, the Southlake, Texas, native enjoyed bogey-free golf from there with a birdie on No. 9 and back-to-back birdies on Nos. 14-15.
Freshman Hannah Screen was tied for 20th at 73. Senior and two-time All-American Athletic Conference performer Yuka Kajiki was tied for 24h at 74. Making her collegiate debut, freshman Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 36th with a 78.
