HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team returns to action to play Sam Houston State and Incarnate Word in a doubleheader, Sunday. First serve begins at 11 a.m. against Sam Houston State and 3 p.m. against Incarnate Word at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
Houston won their first match at the Winston Tennis Facility this season with a 6-1 rout against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday. Despite Tsveta Dimitrova and Sveva Mazzari picking up the first doubles win, Houston lost the next two matches to give the first point to TAMUCC. This was the Cougars first time playing doubles this season due to the shortened match against Lamar last Sunday. The Cougars rallied in singles by winning all six matches to secure the win.
Senior Sveva Mazzari opened singles by cruising to a 6-4, 6-2 win. Dimitrova followed up with another win shortly after, defeating Luna Dormet 6-2, 7-5. Lauren Alter and Alison Mills also won their matches and both improve to a 2-0 singles record on the season. Ana Glumac battled back from a set down to post an impressive 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win. The last match to finish featured Constandena Nicolaou, and it didn't disappoint. Her dominant serving in the tiebreaks helped her pull out a 7-6, 7-6 victory and sealed a 6-1 overall win.
ABOUT THE BEARKATS
Sam Houston State fell to a tough Texas A&M team 5-2 on Friday. This loss put the Bearkats at 1-1 on the season.
The Bearkats picked up two wins against Texas A&M, with senior Carrie Casey and sophomore Lusine Chobanyon winning their singles matches at line four and six singles. Texas A&M took the top three singles matches in straight sets to propel them to the win. Sam Houston State dropped two doubles matches with the other match not being finished. They lost those matches with scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
ABOUT THE CARDINALS
Incarnate Word will be playing in their first match of the season against Houston on Sunday. The Cardinals are led by seniors Maria Batchinsky, Rachel Sadiq, and Matea Zemunik. New on the scene for Incarnate Word is redshirt freshman Alejandra Landaluce.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
Houston plays in another doubleheader next Saturday, Feb. 3rd by hosting Southern and Prairie View A&M. Action starts with Southern at 10 a.m. while the match against Prairie View A&M begins at 3 p.m., inside Winston Tennis Facility.
