HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team opens the 2018 spring season with a matchup against Lamar, on Sunday, inside Life Time Fitness at the Galleria Mall. First serve against the Cardinals is scheduled for 4 p.m.
The Cougars had a strong fall showing from sophomore Tsveta Dimitrova. The 2017 American Athletic Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, tabbed a team-high 10 wins throughout fall play, including a pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents. Dimitrova enters the spring as the No. 82 player in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
Sophomore Lauren Alter finished the fall season second on the team in wins, collecting five throughout the early season. Senior Sveva Mazzari and sophomore Constandena Nicolaou each finished the fall with four wins apiece, while senior Ana Glumac and freshman Laura Bernardos tallied three wins each.
On the doubles court in the fall, Dimitrova teamed with Mazzari to lead the Cougars to a 4-2 overall record, while Mazzari also paired with Alter to pick up a couple of wins.
The Cougars added a pair of student-athletes to their roster at the change of the semester, welcoming graduate senior Alison Mills, who transferred in from South Carolina, and freshman Elena Tairyan, from Moscow, Russia.
Mills earned nine wins during her time with the Gamecocks, including three during her junior season, and was an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2016-17. Tairyan was hailed as one of the top-100 recruits in the Russian national rankings and has won a multitude of championships on both the singles and doubles courts, including three Armenian Championships.
