Houston Picked Second in American West

HOUSTON â€" While Houston was picked second in the west division in The American Athletic Conference's preseason media poll, the #HTownTakeover did receive the most picks among west division schools to win The American Championship.
With 30 media members participating in the poll, two picked Houston to win the entire league with USF earning top honors with 26 votes. Memphis and Navy, both west division rivals of Houston, each earned one vote each.

In the west division, Memphis led the way with 169 total points and 22 first-place votes while Houston was second with 137 points and six first-place votes. Navy and Tulsa each had one first-place vote while finishing third and fourth, respectively, in the voting. SMU finished fifth while Tulane closed out the group voting.
In the east division, USF claimed all 30 first-place votes with UCF and Temple rounding out the top three, respectively.
Houston opens its season on Sept. 2 when it travels to San Antonio to face UTSA and remains on the road in week two with a Sept. 9 trip at Arizona. The Cougars open their home slate with back-to-back home games against Rice on Sept. 16 and Texas Tech on Sept. 23.
