Dunbar Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

HOUSTON â€" Houston receiver Steven Dunbar has been named to the preseason watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., announced Tuesday.
The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida. The Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

A leader in Houston Football's community service efforts, Dunbar has focused on youth initiatives including Houston's Be A Champion Day, Read Across America and DJ Hayden's Football Camp for Houston youth.
On the field, he had 53 receptions for 692 yards and five touchdowns in 2016. The Metairie, La., has 26 career starts with action in 39 career games and currently ranks 30th on the Houston career receptions chart with 104 receptions.
He and classmate Linell Bonner make up the top returning pass-catching duo in The American with 151 receptions and the second-best duo nationally. The two trail only Middle Tennessee State's Richie James and Ty Lee who combined for 168 receptions in 2016.
The two, along with Chance Allen who completed his playing eligibility in 2016, made Houston one of nine schools nationally with three players with at least 50 receptions each in 2016.
Dunbar is the fourth member of the Houston Football program to earn a spot on a preseason awards, joining Bonner (Biletnikoff Trophy) center Will Noble (Rimington Trophy) and defensive tackle Ed Oliver (Maxwell Award, Bednarik Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Outland Trophy).
