Houston opened competition at the NCAA Championships with the 4x100-meter relay. The Cougars' squad of John Lewis III, Mario Burke, Jacarias Martin and Cameron Burrell completed the 400-meter relay in 38.86 to edge LSU in Heat 3 and earn an automatic qualifying berth into Friday's final.
Houston returns to the finals of the 4x100-meter relay where the team finished second and claimed the silver medal en route to setting a school record in 2016. The Cougars' relay squad will be back on the track at 7:32 p.m. CT, Friday.
Burrell was back on the track an hour later in the 100-meter dash, where he made history while qualifying Friday's final. Burrell won heat two in 9.93 to break the school record set by his father, and current Head Coach Leroy Burrell (9.94, 1989) and clock the sixth fastest time in NCAA history.
Burrell, who qualified third overall in the event, clinched his second-straight berth into the 100-meter dash final. The Houston, Texas, native finished fourth in the event at the 2016 championships after running 10.26, in a race which saw the top-5 finishers all within four-hundredths of a second of each other.
Burrell has now reached the NCAA Championship final in each of the last four straight-track races after finishing as the silver medalist in both the 2016 and 2017 indoor 60-meter dash championship races.
Burke was also back on the track for the 100-meter dash. The sophomore crossed the line in 10.19 to finish 15th overall. The Bridgetown, Barbados, native booked his trip to the outdoor championships after running 10.21 at the NCAA West Regional in Austin.
Martin made his NCAA Championship debut as an individual as the last Cougar in action on Wednesday in the semifinals of the 200-meter dash. Martin crossed the line in 20.68 to place 19th. Martin earned his first trip to the outdoor championship meet after running 20.49 to place 11th at the regional in May.
For the second-consecutive season, sophomore Amere Lattin qualified for the NCAA Championships in each of the 110- and 400-meter hurdles, however Lattin suffered an injury during his heat of the 110-meter race.
