Cougars Qualify Six for Regional Quarterfinals

AUSTIN â€" The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field teams opened the NCAA West Regional by qualifying six student-athletes for Friday's quarterfinal rounds on the first day of action at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Amere Lattin began the running events for the Cougars in his first of two events at the NCAA West Regional. Competing in heat two of the men's 400-meter hurdles, Lattin finished in 51.16 to place second in the heat and gain an automatic qualifying berth into the quarterfinal. Lattin's mark qualified him sixth overall for Friday's race, where he will also run the first round of the 110-meter hurdles.
Freshman Brianne Bethel became the second Cougar to reach the quarterfinal rounds after running the 100-meter dash. Competing in heat six, Bethel crossed the line in 11.28 to finish fourth in her heat and book her spot on time with the 15th fastest mark in the first round. Bethel will also run in the first round of the 200-meter dash on Friday.
The Cougar men followed with an impressive feat by advancing all four student-athletes in the men's 100-meter dash to Friday's quarterfinals. Junior Cameron Burrell set the tone and grabbed the No. 1 overall qualifying time in heat one after running 9.90 (+4.5). Sophomore Mario Burke also picked up an auto-qualifying spot after finishing third in heat two in 10.14.
Despite finishing fourth in heat three, junior Eli Hall was able to pick up a quarterfinal berth by qualifying on time with the 15th fastest mark of the first round in 10.15. Sophomore John Lewis III tallied Houston's last automatic bid of the competition with a third place finish in heat five after running 10.24.
Senior Tori Williams finished 39th in the women's 100 after running 11.58 in heat four.
The Cougars had a trio of field event athletes in action during the first day of the regional. Sophomores Taylor Scaife and Mikaila Martin opened competition in the women's hammer throw. Scaife's top mark traveled 182-2 (55.52m) to place her 38th, while Martin threw 175-0 (53.35m) to place 45th. In the men's long jump, junior Antwan Dickerson's third attempt went 25-0.75 (7.64m) to place him 15th.
