Cougars Fall against SMU

HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team fell 7-0 to American Athletic Conference foe SMU on Saturday, at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Doubles play began with the Cougars forfeiting at the No. 3 position due to injuries to freshmen Tsveta Dimitrova and Cristina Rovira. SMU won the doubles point with a victory at the No. 1 doubles position in a 6-2 decision for Liza Buss and Macie Elliot over Lauren Alter and Sveva Mazzari.
Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou battled back from a 5-3 deficit at the No. 2 doubles position to eventually even the score at 5-5, however, the duo was outlasted by Dasha Sharapova and Sarai Monarrez-Yesaki 7-6.
The Cougars were also forced to begin singles play with a pair of forfeits at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles positions due to Dimitrova and Rovira's injuries.
The Mustangs clinched the overall match with a win at the No. 3 singles position. Nicolaou dropped the first set to Sharapova 6-4, before Sharapova took the match with a 6-0 win in set two. SMU extended their lead with a victory at the No. 2 singles position after a 6-4, 6-2 win for Monarrez-Yesaki over Alter.
SMU picked up another point in a hard-fought match at the No. 4 singles position. Charline Anselmo took the first set 7-5 before Glumac answered with a 6-2 win to even the match in the second set. The super tie-breaker went down to the wire, however Anselmo outlasted Glumac 10-8 for the win.
The Mustangs picked up their final point of the match at the No. 1 singles position where Buss edged Mazzari 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars return to action at 1 p.m., Sunday when they welcome USF to the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis facility. USF enters with a 9-10 record after falling 4-0 at Rice on Friday and 4-1 against Marshall on Saturday. The Bulls are 1-2 against opponents from The American this season.
Sunday's match will also serve as Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day. All University of Houston faculty and staff will be honored during the match. The Cougars will also give each fan in attendance at tomorrow's contest a FREE can of UH Logo Tennis Balls.

The Cougars are proud to introduce the Center Court Club, a restricted-giving program that directly impacts the needs of the University of Houston Tennis program. Gifts to the Center Court Club provide financial support directly to the University of Houston Tennis program for needs beyond the program's operating budget. Revenue generated from the Center Court Club is used at the discretion of the head coach for program enhancements. Membership in the Center Court Club is annual and requires a minimum $100 gift.

For a minimum gift of $500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation and a stadium blanket.
US OPEN
For a minimum gift of $1,000, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket and a lesson from the coach.
GRAND SLAM
For a minimum gift of $2,500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket, a lesson from the coach and a group lesson from the coaching staff.
