Cougars Fall Twice at Texas

AUSTIN -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 3-1 and 2-1 in a doubleheader with Texas on Sunday afternoon at McCombs Field.
With the decisions, the Cougars fall to 16-16 overall, while the Longhorns improve to 20-14.
Pitchers Savannah Heebner and Trystan Melancon each saw their respective records fall to 7-6 on the season in complete-game efforts. Heebner surrendered three runs (two earned) on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts in six innings pitched in the first game of the afternoon. Melancon gave up two runs on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts in seven and two-thirds innings in game two.
Senior Shelby Miller and redshirt sophomore Sarah Barker co-led the team with two-hit performances in game two. Heebner highlighted the offense with a double in game one.
ON DECK
The Cougars will return to the friendly confines of Cougar Softball Stadium for a doubleheader with Lamar on Tuesday, April 4, starting at 4 p.m. Fans should note the 4 p.m. start is one hour later than the initial 3 p.m. publicized time.
TEXAS 3, HOUSTON 1
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston utilized small-ball tactics to manufacture the first run of the game. After the Longhorns spotted the Cougars two base runners on a hit by pitch and walk in the opening frame, a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly from Barker and Miller allowed Houston to take a 1-0 lead.
However, Texas answered with one run on a triple and passed ball in the bottom frame to even things at 1-1.
2nd | In the bottom of the second, sophomore Elise LeBeouf kept the Longhorns off the board, gunning down a runner at the plate on a base hit.
3rd | Texas tacked on two runs on a RBI single to claim the 3-1 final.

5th | A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth inning allowed the Longhorns to take a 1-0 lead.
6th | A bases-loaded infield error in the top of the sixth allowed Houston to tie the game at 1-1. Singles from Miller, Barker and LeBeouf loaded the bases, before Miller scored on the miscue.
8th | A pair of singles in the bottom of the eighth allowed Texas to plate the game-winning run for the 2-1 final
