TULSA, Okla. -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 7-3 in its American Athletic Conference series finale at Tulsa on Saturday afternoon at Collins Family Softball Complex.
With the decision, the Cougars fall to 20-20 overall and 5-4 in The American, while the Golden Hurricane improve to 29-13 overall and 8-1 in league action.
Sophomore Savannah Heebner took the loss to fall to 9-8 in the circle. Heebner surrendered seven runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings of work. Freshman Hannah Wolfe pitched two perfect innings in relief.
Sophomore Maya Thomas and Brooke Vannoy led Houston with two hits apiece. Thomas finished 2-for-4, while Vannoy finished 2-for-3 with one RBI. Senior Shelby Miller and junior Kaylin Crumpton each doubled.
KEY INNINGS
1st | The Cougars struck first for two runs in the opening frame. After Thomas reached on an infield error and advanced to second on a fielder's choice, senior Shelby Miller drove her home on a double down the right field line. In the next at bat, Vannoy followed with a single to center field to plate Miller for the 2-0 lead.
The Golden Hurricane responded with three runs in the bottom frame to take a 3-2 advantage.
2nd | Houston plated one run on an infield error in the top of the second. Crumpton doubled and senior Jaylin Baldridge singled to put runners at the corners, before Crumpton came home on an error up the middle to tied the game at 3-3.
In the bottom frame, Tulsa plated two unearned runs to retake the lead at 5-3.
3rd | The Golden Hurricane tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the third to extend their lead to 7-3.
7th | The Cougars threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out. Wolfe singled off the left field wall for her first career hit in her very first Houston at bat, and freshman Sarah Queen followed with a pinch-hit single up the middle. A fielder's choice then put runners at the corners, before Thomas perfectly placed a bunt single to load the bases. Unfortunately, a double play in the next at bat ended the game.
