Cougars Suffer Two Decisions at Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 1-0 in 10 innings in a continuation of Thursday's American Athletic Conference series opener, before falling 6-5 to Tulsa on Friday afternoon at Collins Family Softball Complex.
With the decisions, the Cougars fall to 20-19 overall and 5-3 in The American, while the Golden Hurricane improve to 28-13 overall and 7-1 in league action.
In the circle, sophomore Savannah Heebner and freshman Trystan Melancon each suffered losses to fall to 9-7, respectively.
Pitching both Friday and Saturday, Heebner surrendered just one run on four hits with two strikeouts and no free passes in a complete-game effort. The native of Sedalia, Colo., retired the first 22 batters she faced for seven and one-third perfect innings.
Freshman Trystan Melancon surrendered five runs on four hits and four walks in two innings pitched in game two. Sophomore Presley Bell logged the final four innings, scattering seven hits and one run with one strikeout.
Senior Shelby Miller and freshman Arielle James led the Cougars at the plate, each posting 3-hit efforts between the two games. Both James and Heebner recorded one double.

The Cougars will close their series at Tulsa in a noon first pitch on Saturday.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Miller led off the frame with a single to center field, before advancing to second base on a fielding error. After freshman Kelli Montgomery followed with a walk to put runners on first and second, a sacrifice bunt from redshirt sophomore Sarah Barker and Tulsa throwing error allowed Miller to score. Sophomore Brooke Vannoy followed with a walk to load the bases. James plated both Montgomery and Barker on a single up the middle, before Vannoy scored on a wild pitch in the next at bat for a 4-0 lead.
In the bottom frame, the Golden Hurricane plated three runs on a pair of home runs to cut the lead to 4-3.
3rd | In the bottom of the third, Tulsa plated two more runs to take a 5-4 advantage.
4th | In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Hurricane tacked on one more run to go up 6-4.
7th | After James doubled to open the top of the seventh, Miller pushed her across on a single to center field for the 6-5 final.
