HOUSTON -- Houston Baseball jumped out to an early lead with a six-run second inning and never looked back as it earned an 8-0 shutout win over Prairie View A&M Wednesday night at Schroeder Park.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 8-3 on the year and 6-2 at home, while the Panthers fell to 3-13.

HOUSTON NOTES
- Houston pitching combined for a shutout -- the first combined shutout since May 15, 2016 when Trey Cumbie and Bubba Maxwell combined to blank Cincinnati.
- Connor Wong singled and has now reached base in all 11 games this season.
- Trey Cumbie struck out nine, tying his career-high, which happened on May 24, 2016 vs. Cincinnati.
- Jake Scheiner led Houston with two doubles and three RBI at the plate, while accounting for four of the Cougars' 11 hits.
- Freshman Fred Villarreal made his first career appearance out of the bullpen.

Houston starter Trey Cumbie retired the first 12 Panther hitters he faced, allowing his first hit of the game on a single to open the fifth inning. Cumbie finished with 6.0 shutout innings, surrendering just one hit with a career-tying nine strikeouts to move to 1-0 on the year in his third start of the year.
Freshman reliever Fred Villarreal made his first career appearance out of the bullpen, tossing 2.0 shutout innings with two hits and a walk before handing the ball over to fellow freshman Carter Henry, who kept the shutout in tact with 1.0 scoreless frame to close it out.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first after Padgett reached on an error, stole second and came around to score on an RBI-single by Scheiner.
2nd | The Cougars took advantage of a few defensive miscues and a big two-out, bases clearing double by Padgett to extend the inning. Following Padgett's three-RBI hit, Joe Davis scored on a Scheiner double and Scheiner scored on a Julks single for the six-run frame and 7-0 lead.
6th | Houston added another run in the sixth when Padgett and Joe Davis opened the frame with back-to-back singles, allowing Scheiner to plate his third RBI of the game on his second double for the 8-0 lead.
PRAIRIE VIEW A&M NOTES
Prairie View A&M fell to 3-13 on the year and was held to just five hits, led by Nathan Carter's two-hit night. Starter Tyler Laux allowed three earned runs on six hits and three walks in 5.0 innings for the loss, falling to 0-3 on the season.
