Cougars Fall 4-1 at BYU

PROVO, Utah â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team fell 4-1 at BYU to wrap weekend play on Saturday, in Provo, Utah.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars began the day short-handed after freshman Tsveta Dimitrova was forced to miss the match due to an injury. Houston bounced back to even doubles with a 6-2 win from Sveva Mazzari and Lauren Alter at the No. 1 doubles position over Savannah Ware-Avina and Samantha Smith. The win for the pair is its seventh this season.
The Cougars would move on to clinch the doubles point after Ana Glumac and Constandena Nicolaou defeated Kate Cusick and Natella Nabieva 6-3 at the No. 2 doubles position. The victory for the duo was the second of the spring.
BYU picked up its first point to open singles play with a forfeit at No. 6 singles due to Dimitrova's injury, making the score 1-1.
BYU took the lead at 2-1 with a win at the No. 4 singles position. Smith grabbed the lead with a 6-2 win in the first set, before defeating Nicolaou 6-0 in set two to claim the point. BYU would extend the lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win for Ware-Avina over Mazzari at the No. 1 singles position.
Cusick picked up the match-clinching point for BYU with a victory at the No. 3 singles position over Cristina Rovira. Cusick won 6-2 in the first set, before outlasting Rovira 7-6 (7-4) in set two.
When the match was halted, Alter trailed Nabieva 7-5, 5-5 at the No. 2 singles position, while Glumac trailed Taylah Beckman 5-1 in the first set at the No. 5 singles position.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars return home to begin their final homestand of the 2017 regular season when they host Lamar on Sunday, April 2 at the Houston Country Club. First serve against the Cardinals is scheduled for 1 p.m.

For a minimum gift of $1,000, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket and a lesson from the coach.
GRAND SLAM
For a minimum gift of $2,500, supporters receive a team poster and a signed tennis ball, private practice invitation, a stadium blanket, fleece jacket, a lesson from the coach and a group lesson from the coaching staff.
