SALT LAKE CITY -- The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team fell 7-0 to the University of Utah in the first match of its 2-match road trip, on Thursday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars began the day short-handed after freshman Tsveta Dimitrova was forced to miss the match due to an injury. The Utes won the first point of the match with a 6-1 victory from Luisa Gerstner Da Ro and Alexia Petrovic over Ana Glumac and Cristina Rovira at the No. 2 doubles position.
When doubles play was halted, Sveva Mazzari and Lauren Alter trailed Margo Pletcher and Brianna Turley 5-4 at the No. 1 doubles position.
Utah picked up another point to open singles play with a forfeit at No. 6 singles due to Dimitrova's injury, making the score 2-0.
The Utes tallied their third point of the match with a win at the No. 2 singles position. Brianna Turley defeated Cristina Rovira 6-2 in the first set, before returning for a 6-1 win in set two to extend the lead to 3-0 Utah.
Utah picked up the deciding point at the No. 1 singles position with a victory for Pletcher over Mazzari. The Utes took set one 6-1, and clinched the match with a 6-2 mark in set two. The Utes would then add another point at the No. 5 singles position when Taylor Calton defeated Glumac 6-4, 6-2.
Utah garnered its sixth point from freshman Jena Cheng at the No. 4 singles position. Nicolaou jumped ahead with a 6-4 win in set one. Alter and Petrovic were locked in a duel at the No. 3 singles position as the final match of the afternoon.
