HOUSTON -- Runners Amere Lattin and Tori Williams and thrower Cameron Cornelius have been named the American Athletic Conference Track & Field Athletes of the Week for their performances at the Cougar Spring Break Invitational, the league office announced Tuesday.
LATTIN'S VARIETY WEEKEND
Lattin, who has blossomed into a jack-of-all-trades, competed in four separate events for the Cougars on the opening weekend of outdoor season.
Lattin, who is most comfortable as a hurdler, opened as the anchor leg for the men's 4x100-meter relay squad which ran 39.47 to win the event and clock the nation's No. 3 time. Just a short time later, the Missouri City, Texas, native was back on the track for the 200-meter dash where he ran 20.82 to again rank No. 3 nationally.
The sophomore wrapped the invitational as the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay, helping the Cougars run 3:11.49 to sit at No. 19 in the NCAA, before picking up his fourth win of the weekend in the 4x200-meter relay in Houston's only event at the TSU Relays on Saturday when the squad of Lattin, Mario Burke, Jacarias Martin and Curtis Brown ran 1:23.13 for the win.
The award for Lattin is his second career weekly honor, after being named track athlete of the week during the indoor season, on Feb. 14.
WILLIAMS OPENS FINAL SLATE
Williams began her senior season right where she left off during the outdoor slate, helping the Cougars' 4x100 team run the nation's third best time this season. Williams ran the anchor with Bria Carter, Sierra Smith and Brianne Bethel to clock 44.23 and win the event.
Individually, Williams competed in the 200 at the season-opening meet, where she ran 23.45 in the event to finish first overall and give her the No. 3 time in the NCAA this season.
The award for Williams is her third this season after winning two track athlete of the week awards during the indoor season.
CORNELIUS CAN'T LOSE
After winning all five shot put competitions he entered during the indoor season, it was no surprise that Cornelius came away victorious at the Cougar Spring Break Invitational. In fact, five of his six throws would have won the event, but it was his mark of 61-11.5 (18.88m) that set a new personal best and moved him to No. 3 nationally this season.
The meet for Cornelius marks the first time he has been in an outdoor ring since returning from his fourth knee surgery earlier this season. Cornelius was also named field athlete of the week during the indoor season, on Feb. 14.
COUGAR AWARDS
Houston has now won a combined 12 Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Junior Cameron Burrell earned two track and one field awards during the indoor season, while Brian Barraza and Eli Hall each took track awards.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
Houston heads across town to compete in the Victor Lopez Classic hosted by Rice. Field action for the 2-day meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., on Friday with the men's hammer throw, while running will begin later that day at 7 p.m., with the men's 1,500-meters.
