Red Takes Game 1 of World Series, 5-1

HOUSTON -- Houston Softball's Team Red took the opening game of the Red-White World Series, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at Cougar Softball Stadium.
KEY INNINGS
4th | Red extended its lead to 5-1 with a leadoff home run over the left field wall from sophomore Breelyn Thames in the fourth inning.
3rd | Red used a three-run third inning to take a 4-1 lead on White. With two outs, Sarah Barker (walk), Kaylin Crumpton (single), Elise LeBeouf (triple) and Savannah Heebner (single) all reached safely in taking what would prove to be the only lead change of the game.
2nd | Red got a two-out double to left field from Thames to plate LeBeouf and tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the second inning. LeBeouf singled up the middle to open the frame before advancing to third on consecutive groundouts to second base.
1st | White capitalized on a two-hit inning to plate one run in the opening frame. Freshman Arielle James hit a leadoff single up the middle to open the game. Two batters later, senior Shelby Miller delivered James home on a single into the left-center gap.

Starter Savannah Heebner recorded seven strikeouts and faced the minimum in four innings in a complete-game effort.

Red will go for the series win in a 10 a.m. first pitch on Saturday with the if-necessary game to follow at noon if needed. Admission is free to the public.
