PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- The University of Houston Softball team fell 3-1 to Northwestern on Sunday afternoon at Big League Dreams Complex to close its participation in the Mary Nutter Classic.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 6-11 overall, while Wildcats improve to 3-10.
Freshman Arielle James finished 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored. Sophomore Sarah Barker plated James on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Freshman Trystan Melancon saw her record fall to 2-5 on the season, allowing three runs (one earned) in two innings pitched. Sophomores Presley Bell and Savannah Heebner each logged two innings of scoreless relief.
KEY INNINGS
1st | The Wildcats plated one unearned run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning.
2nd | Northwestern tacked on two more runs (one earned) on two hits in the bottom of the second to take a 3-0 lead.
6th | Barker plated Houston's lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly. James hit an infield single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from junior Kaylin Crumpton, before walks to Heebner and senior Shelby Miller loaded the bases for Barker's flyout.
