Cougars Fall 79-50 against RV/RV USF

HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team fell 79-50 to RV/RV USF on Tuesday, inside Hofheinz Pavilion. Sophomore Serithia Hawkins paced the Cougars with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
USF came out on fire in the first quarter, using a pair of big runs to take a 21-8 lead into the first intermission. The Bulls opened on a 9-2 run to start the frame, before Houston cut the lead to four at 9-5. From there, USF reeled off nine straight points en route to their first double-digit lead of the game. USF held the Cougars to just 3-of-13 shooting in the first period and outrebounded Houston 15-5.
The Cougars shook off the slow start and found a rhythm in the second period, outscoring the Bulls 19-18 in the frame. Houston shot 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from the field in the quarter, including a 4-for-4 mark from Hawkins, who had 10 of her 16 points in the second. Despite the scoring for the Cougars, the Bulls were able to extend their lead to 18 late in the half, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Jasmyne Harris and Hawkins cut the lead back to 12 at the break.
Houston was unable to hold off the USF charge in the second half, when the Bulls came out on fire scoring 12 of the first 18 points in the half. Ariadna Pujol and Maria Jespersen each had big quarters for USF, scoring nine and eight points respectively in the third alone. For the Cougars, Jacqueline Blake scored six of her 14 points in the period, but Houston trailed 63-40 heading into the final quarter.
The Cougars defense stepped up in the fourth quarter, holding USF to its lowest shooting stretch of the night at 35.7 percent (5-of-14). However, the defense proved to be just a little too late as the Bulls never relinquished their double-digit lead.

TURNING POINT
The Cougars finished the first half with a 6-0 flurry on back-to-back 3-pointers from Harris and Hawkins. However, USF opened the second half on a 12-6 run to open the lead back to 18 and put the game out of reach.
TOP PERFORMERS
Houston: Sophomore forward Serithia Hawkins had a monster game for the Cougars, matching a career-high with 16 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for her 10th career double-double. Senior Jacqueline Blake picked up her seventh straight double-digit scoring game, and eighth in her last nine games, with 14 points.
USF: USF had four players reach double figures in scoring including Kitija Laksa and Ariadna Pujol who tied for the game-high 24 points. Pujol completed the double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds. Maria Jespersen added 12 points, while Laia Flores just missed a triple-double with 10 points, nine boards and nine assists.
NEWS AND NOTES
- With seven points against USF, freshman Jasmyne Harris moved into seventh on the all-time freshman scoring list with 298 in her young career. With her 3-point field goal in the game, Harris moved into a tie for third on the freshman list with teammate Angela Harris (43).
- With a steal in the game, Angela Harris now has 49 in her career, moving her into sixth on the freshman list, passing teammate Serithia Hawkins' rookie mark from last season.
UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS
Houston returns to action on Saturday, Feb 25, when it welcomes East Carolina to town. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., and the game will be the final women's basketball game inside Hofheinz Pavilion. The pavilion is scheduled to undergo large-scale renovations immediately following the 2016-17 season.
