Houston SAAC Initiates Mental Health Awareness Events
10/5/2017 12:00:00 AM | General

HOUSTON -- In an effort to promote and shine light on a topic that impacts student-athletes nationwide, The American Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is shining a light on mental health awareness throughout the year in a conference-wide mental health awareness initiative.
As part of the initiative, the University of Houston SAAC has taken the lead by partnering with the UH Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to hold events across the University of Houston campus for the UH community to sign pledges promising to help end the stigma of mental health. Supporters of the initiative are also encouraged to join The American SAAC awareness by using the hashtag #Pow6rfulMinds on social media.

With green as the color of mental health awareness, each Houston team will don green items at some point during their respective seasons with the Houston Volleyball program kicking the initiative off by donning green warmup shirts before its win over UConn last Friday.
This weekend will see the Houston Football program wear green wristbands vs. SMU while the Houston Soccer program will wear green warmup tops prior to its Oct. 19 game vs. Cincinnati. The Houston Cross Country program will wear green wristbands at its Oct. 14 trip to Louisville, Ky., for Pre-Nationals.
Other winter and spring sport programs' green accessories will be announced at later dates.
Balancing athletics, academics and a social life makes student-athletes more susceptible to unique stressors on a daily basis. Thirty-five NCAA student-athletes committed suicide between 2003-12, making up a total of 7.3 percent of the total student-athletes' deaths occurring during this timeframe.
The American Conference will produce a video featuring clips from all the various campus mental health awareness initiatives, and the video will debut at the conference's April 6-7 Academic Symposium, at which research regarding student-athlete health and well-being will be presented.
