Cougars Drop Heartbreaker in Memphis

HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 66-65 decision against Memphis on Wednesday. Freshman Jasmyne Harris led the Cougars with 19 points against the Tigers.
Houston came out on fire in the first quarter, shooting 50 percent (7-of-14), including 5-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line. After giving up the first basket of the game, the Cougars went on two big runs in the quarter, starting with a 7-0 mark to take a 7-2 lead. After a pair of Tigers' buckets, Houston answered with a 9-0 mark to extend the lead to 16-9. Harris led the Cougars with 10 points in the frame, while making her first career start.
The tide turned in the second quarter, with Memphis heating up and shooting 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the field. Despite the hot shooting for the Tigers, Houston dominated the battle on the boards in the first half 19-14, including eight offensive rebounds which led to six second-chance points. At the break, the Cougars led 34-26.
Memphis opened the third quarter on a 4-0 run, forcing the Cougars to call a quick timeout. Following the stoppage, Houston answered with a layup from freshman Angela Harris and a quick steal and a finish off the inbound by Jasmyne Harris.
Twice more Memphis made runs to cut into the lead in the quarter, but the Cougars had an answer for each. The Tigers cut the lead to two at 42-40, but Angela Harris buried a three to extend the lead. After Memphis answer with a 3-pointer of their own, the freshman stepped up again with another ball from deep to make the lead 48-43. Harris finished the quarter with 10 points and Houston led 53-47 with 10 minutes to play.
Memphis opened the fourth quarter on a 10-3 run to take the lead for the first time since the opening bucket, with just over five minutes remaining, at 57-56. Houston tied the score at 60 with four straight points from senior Kierra Graves. However, a Houston offensive foul with 1:50 remaining led to a 3-pointer by Brea Elmore to give Memphis a lead it would not relinquish.

TURNING POINT
With just 14 seconds remaining in the contest, Houston had the ball down by three. Junior Chyanne Butler had a look at a 3-pointer, but her shot was off. Sophomore Serithia Hawkins grabbed her 10th rebound and finished the put-back for her 10th point, however the buzzer sounded and Houston fell 66-65.
TOP PERFORMERS
Houston: Houston had double-figure scoring from three players, including a team-high 19 from Jasmyne Harris. Angela Harris fouled out with 18 points, while Serithia Hawkins added 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her eighth career double-double and fourth this season.
Memphis: The Tigers picked up a big contribution from their leading scorer Cheyene Creighton who finished with a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Damonique Miller also scored in double-figures after adding 12 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Serithia Hawkins finished the contest with 10 points, giving her 406 for her career. The sophomore also pulled down 10 rebounds in the game for her eighth career double-double.
- Houston won the battle on the boards, 41-37, pulling down 15 offensive rebounds which led to 20 second-chance points.
UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS
Houston has a quick turnaround before heading to Hartford, Conn., and facing No. 1/1 UConn. The Cougars and the Huskies are scheduled to tip at 11 a.m., on Saturday, and the game will air live via SNY.
