HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team opens the 2017 spring season with a pair of home matches against UT Arlington and Prairie View A&M on Saturday. First serve against the Mavericks is scheduled for 10 a.m., with the match against the Panthers set to follow at 3 p.m.
"It's been a long time coming, but I am so excited for these six girls to be here and start the new foundation for this program," Head Coach Courtney Steinbock said. "They are all very talented and I can't wait to continue to build upon their talent for years to come, especially on our newly renovated facility. New team, new facility, new year. Excitement is an understatement."
MEET THE COOGS
Houston returns three student-athletes from the fall season including juniors Sveva Mazzari and Ana Glumac as well as freshman Tsveta Dimitrova. The trio combined to go 20-5 in singles play during the fall, with Mazzari and Dimitrova each going 7-1. The duo teamed on the doubles court for a 4-5 record in the fall circuit.
Three freshmen join the Cougars for the spring season. Constandena Nicolaou comes to Houston from London where she was a six-time qualifier into the main draw for ITF Tournament play. Nicolaou will be joined by Cristina Rovira from Miami, who was rated as the No. 13 American Junior prospect during her junior career. Lauren Alter also joins the Cougars from New Zealand and was the 2016 New Zealand champion in both singles and doubles.
SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS AND PANTHERS
Prairie View A&M opened its spring season with a pair of road matchups at Sam Houston State and UT Rio Grande Valley last week. The Panthers dropped a 7-0 decision to the Bearkats on Friday, before losing 5-2 to the Vaqueros on Saturday.
UT Arlington will open its spring season in Houston.
