Houston Adds Garcia for 2017 Season

HOUSTON -- Houston Softball Head Coach Kristin Vesely announced the addition of Mariah Garcia to the 2017 roster on Friday afternoon.
Garcia, a 5-9 shortstop/third baseman out of Austin, will compete as a junior and have two years of eligibility with the Cougars beginning with the 2017 season.
"Mariah is a tremendous athlete," Vesely said. "Her athleticism and ability will add to the depth of the team. She will have an immediate impact on the field and can't wait to get her suited up. We are happy to get her on campus."
Garcia joins the Cougars after playing two seasons under Head Coach Ken Delcambre at Galveston College. With the Whitecaps, Garcia was named the 2016 NJCAA South Conference Player of the Year and NFCA NJCAA Division I First-Team All-America as a sophomore after turning in a .453/.507/.950 split with 81 hits, 25 doubles, two triples, 20 home runs, 68 RBI, 61 runs scored and 18 stolen bases.
As a freshman, Garcia turned in a .326/.386/.530 split with 59 hits, seven doubles, 10 home runs, 46 RBI, 45 runs scored and 41 stolen bases to garner First-Team All-Region XIV honors.
Prior to attending Galveston College, Garcia was a four-year letterwinner at Stephen F. Austin High School. Across her prep campaign, she was named the 2011 District 15-5A Newcomer of the Year and was a two-time team MVP, first-team all-district selection, all-star and all-star MVP. Also a three-year letterwinner on the AHS basketball team, Garcia played club for the Texas Bombers Gold.
Houston opens the 2017 season with its first 11 games at Cougars Softball Stadium, highlighted with the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational (Feb. 10-12) and Rawlings Classic (Feb. 17-19). In between the two tournaments, the Cougars will play host to Houston Baptist on Feb. 15.
