HOUSTON -- Following its season-opening win over then-No. 3 Oklahoma, the Houston Football program rose to No. 6 in the week one Associated Press poll, its highest ranking since the Cougars were ranked No. 3 on Nov. 10, 1990.
The highest-ranked team in the state of Texas, Houston has received a No. 6 ranking from the AP on seven total occasions with Tuesday's announcement, the last coming on Nov. 3, 1990.

Tuesday's announcement marks the 51st time Houston has been ranked in the AP top 10 since the program began play in 1946 and the 186th time in the AP top 25. The Cougars climbed nine spots total from their AP preseason ranking of No. 15.
Houston also claimed a top-10 ranking in the USA Today Amway Coaches Poll, coming in at No. 7 after starting No. 13 in the preseason poll.
With its win over Oklahoma, Houston now has a program-record five straight wins over top-25 opponents, a number that ranks third nationally among active streaks against ranked opponents behind Alabama (8) and Stanford (6).
Houston, Alabama and Florida State were the only three teams to defeat a ranked opponent by double digits in the opening weekend of the season. The three teams are also the only teams nationally with at least 13 wins on two different occasions over the last five years.
In addition to Oklahoma in the top 25 at No. 14, Houston also faces Louisville on Nov. 17 at TDECU Stadium. The Cardinals climbed six spots to No. 13 in the latest rankings after defeating Charlotte, 70-14.
Houston returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. when it hosts Lamar in its 2016 home opener at TDECU Stadium.
