HOUSTON -- Houston linebacker Steven Taylor has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Cougars' 40-16 win at Cincinnati Thursday night.
Taylor's honor is the second national individual honor this season for the #HTownTakeover as Brandon Wilson was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Cougars' season-opening win over Oklahoma.

The nation's leader in sacks, Taylor collected a team-high nine tackles including two sacks while returning a fourth-quarter interception 74 yards for his first career touchdown to seal Houston's road win. He helped lead a Houston defense that held Cincinnati to its lowest offensive output at home since 2010 as the Bearcats totaled just 307 yards including 30 rushing yards on 25 attempts. The Houston defense owns the nation's top rushing defense, allowing an average of 38.3 rushing yards per game.
Taylor now has a sack in a nation's best five consecutive games with multiple sacks in all three games this season. With his efforts Thursday night, Taylor moved into fifth on the Houston career sacks and tackles for loss charts with 22.5 sacks and 44 tackles for loss. The pick-six also gave him interceptions in back-to-back games against Cincinnati after intercepting a Bearcats' pass in Houston's 2015 win.
Taylor is already a member of the Bronko Nagurski Watch List. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the 2016 Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Thurs., Nov. 17. The winner will be chosen from those five finalists who are part of the 2016 FWAA All-America Team.
