PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Houston freshman Nicole Young was named the American Athletic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, the league office announced Monday.
In her first collegiate appearance, Young earned a win while collecting nine saves without allowing a goal in 79 minutes played. The Pearland, Texas, native entered the game for the injured Rachel Estopare at the 12 minute mark against UTSA. Young's nine saves is a season high for the Cougars.
"This is great news for Nicole," Head Coach Chris Pfau said. "For her to come into the middle of a game and play at the level she did shows the talent in her ability especially as a freshman seeing her first action. She was able to play at this level because every day she shows up to training and works extremely hard. It also shows how well assistant coach Suzie Grech and volunteer coach Cami Koski have trained our keepers to make sure they are ready at any time."
The honor is Young's first and Houston's second Goalkeeper of the Week accolade, Estopare garnered the same laurel on Aug. 29.
