Carl Lewis Selected As Honorary Captain

Legendary track and field alum and current assistant coach Carl Lewis will serve as the honorary captain for the University of Houston football team when it meets No. 3/3 Oklahoma in the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3. Lewis will represent the Cougars at midfield prior to kickoff at 11 a.m., CT.
A nine-time Olympic gold medalist, Lewis joined the Cougars in 1979 before earning a spot on the United States Olympic team the following year, qualifying in the long jump and with the 4x100-meter relay team. During his time with the Cougars, Lewis won six NCAA Championships before moving on to win eight gold medals at the World Championships from 1983-91.
Lewis returned to coach the Cougars full time prior to the 2014-15 season where he works with the sprinters and jumpers. In his time as an assistant, the Cougars have won three American Conference Championships and posted their highest finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships when they finished 10th in 2016.
