Clovis, Calif. -- For the second time in three days freshman hurdler Amere Lattin has qualified for the IAAF World Junior Championships, after competing in the 400-meter hurdles at the USATF Junior Championships, on Sunday.
Lattin qualified for the 400 hurdle final on Saturday, with the third fastest time in the prelims at 52.46. The Missouri City, Texas native would go on to shave more than a second off his time in the finals to run 51.30 and finish second. The second place finish means Lattin will book his second event at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, after also finishing top-2 in the 110-meter hurdles on Friday.
Freshman Brian Bell will join Lattin in Europe for the championships after qualifying in the 800-meters on Saturday. Lattin also finished second in his event, en route to breaking his own school record and running 1:47.18.
The 2016 IAAF World Junior Championships will be held Tuesday July 19 through Sunday, July 24 in the eighth largest city in Poland. Lattin will be the first Cougar on the track in the 110 hurdles at 9:55 a.m. on July 20, before running in the 400 hurdles at 10:35 a.m. on July 21. Bell will run in the first round of the 800 meters on July 22 at 10:25 a.m.
NATIONALLY RANKED SIGNING CLASS
The Cougars made noise throughout the entire offseason when the men's signing class was ranked as the No. 2 class in the nation by Flotrack last July. The current freshmen on campus are led by three incoming student-athletes on the MileSplit All-American team. Marcus McWilliams (110m hurdles), Gerald Mills (200m) and John Lewis III (100m) all earned All-America honors, while distance runner Jahnavi Schneider was named as the No. 3 cross country recruit in the state of Texas by TxRunning.com.
