HOUSTON -- The Houston Cougar Women's Tennis team has taken Building Champions For Life to a new level after passing a Houston record 16 hours on average per student-athlete during the 2016 sprint semester.
The Cougars landed five of their six student-athletes on the Dean's List and had all six post grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. Earlier this month, the University of Houston announced that Cougar tennis had posted the highest 3.69 GPA for the 2016 spring semester giving the team a 3.46 cumulative GPA.
In the classroom, the Cougars were led by senior Maria Cardenas who passed 19 spring hours while compiling a 3.96 semester GPA. Fellow graduating senior Rocio Martin passed 12 hours, giving the business major a 3.75 spring GPA.
Overall this spring, a record 88 Houston student-athletes earned a spot on the University of Houston Dean's List by recording a 3.50 GPA or better while passing 12 or more hours, a department record for a spring semester.
Those student-athletes led a group that recorded the second-best spring GPA, 2.87, in athletics department history. The number falls just behind the record spring GPA of 2.92 set last spring.
With a cumulative GPA of 2.89, Houston student-athletes compiled the second-best cumulative GPA following a spring semester in department history, coming in just behind the record of 2.92 also set last spring.
On average, Houston student-athletes passed an average of 13.8 hours in the spring semester, the second-best mark behind the 13.9 hours passed last spring.
Earlier this season, the Cougars were honored as having one of the top-10 Academic Progress Rate scores out of all the tennis programs in the country. The award marked the fifth straight year the Houston has claimed the award.
The scores required to be in the top 10 ranged from 983 to a perfect 1,000, depending on the sport. Earning a perfect APR score were 944 teams. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
