Romero, Davis Honored on All-Region Teams

HOUSTON â€" Houston Baseball sophomore hurler Seth Romero added to his career accolades list with a nod on the ABCA All-Region First Team, while freshman Joe Davis continues to bring in honors as an All-Region Second Team selection, announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Wednesday.
Romero garnered the award after leading Houston with a 2.29 ERA and a conference-best 113 strikeouts. He finished 6-4 with two complete games in 15 appearances and 13 starts for the Cougars, totaling 94.1 innings. Romero held opponents to a .186 average, a conference-leading number.
The West Columbia, Texas native was a Second Team All-Conference selection and was named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Month of March and was named to the National Pitcher of the Year Watch List and a Preseason All-Conference honoree.
Davis, a Third Team All-American, Freshman All-American and the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, led the Houston offense with 79 hits, 17 doubles, 14 home runs and 58 RBI, while hitting .331 during his rookie campaign.

This marks the fourth straight year under head coach Todd Whitting that Houston had a Cougar named a to the ABCA All-Region Team and Romero and Davis mark the 17th and 18th Cougars to earn this honor in program history.
Garnering this honor over the last three seasons were Kyle Survance (2015), Andrew Lantrip (2015), Chris Iriart (2015), Chase Wellbrock (2014), Casey Grayson (2014), Tyler Ford (2014) and Austin Pruitt (2013).

- Pitched his first career 9.0-inning complete game in a win over Grand Canyon (March 19)
- Struck out 11 in a win at Alabama (March 12) and followed it up with a season-high 13 strikeout effort vs. GCU
- Named the NCBWA National Pitcher of the Month for May after owning a 0.58 ERA in five appearances and four starts
- Broke the American Championship record with his 11 strikeouts in a single game vs. Tulane (May 26)
- Went at least 7.0 innings in seven of his 13 starts and fanned at least four in every start
- Tossed his second complete game in a win at Cincinnati (May 13)

Davis enjoyed a banner freshman season where he was tabbed a First Team Freshman All-American, by NCBWA, a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, a Third Team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, named American Rookie of the Year and a First Team All-Conference selection.
- Hit .331 in 2016 for second-best average on the team
- Led Houston in hits (78), doubles (17), home runs (14), RBI (58) and slugging percentage (.577)
- Broke the all-time Houston freshman home run record (14) and RBI record (58)
- Tied the all-time Houston freshman record in doubles (17)
- Tallied 25 multi-hit games and 12 multi-RBI games â€" both team-highs
- Started 58 of the 59 games either at first base or designated hitter
- Had a career-high four hits in a game (at Arkansas)
- Drove in a career-high six RBI in a 24-6 win over No. 15 Rice
- Hit first career grand slam in win over Rice and second vs. No. 11 Tulane
- Named to Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team
- Named American Rookie of the Year
- Named First Team All-American Athletic Conference (1B)
- Named to the American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team
- Named to All-Silver Glove Series vs. Rice
- Was a five-time American Weekly Honor Roll honoree
- Named American Player of the Week (April 10)
